Field Collecting Trip
Delaware Mineralogical Society
Invertebrate Fossil Collecting Trip

Where: Strawser Excavation Site, Seven Stars, Pa
When: Saturday, Oct 28, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Site Information: I do not have a lot of information on this site. It is known for its invertebrate fossils, most notably rather large trilobites. I think they get into the 4” range. This site was recommended to me by a fellow DMS member. Here’s a few comments I found on the ‘net:

1. It is an interesting site. There are different types of shale here. Some crumbles at the slightest touch, and is more of a brown color. Some is much harder and has blue hue with iron veins. This is the good rock. This seems to be where most of the trilobites are found. There were several found by others that were there that day.

2. My daughter and I spent the morning cracking rock in Seven Stars. There is a lot to find. We found some fragments of trilobites and other person found 6 in partial trilobite missing its head.

I’ll send more information as I hopefully get it from DVPS members (Gene, Eric, Chris please help).

Location: I’ll send directions to the site to those who sign up for this trip. It’s about a 2 ½ hr. drive from Delaware, and not far from the Mt. Pleasant Mills/Middleburg sites we frequently visit.

Safety Equipment: It’s an active quarry so the usual full safety equipment is required: Hard hats, safety boots, safety vest and safety glasses.

Collecting equipment: As I understand it, this is primarily a walking around and looking carefully, selecting interesting candidate rocks, and splitting them to reveal fossils. Equipment might include small to medium weight hammers, pick, splitting chisels and wedges, hand truck/wagon, wrapping paper. Perhaps a water bucket and brush?

Sign-up: As usual, contact Tom Pankratz by email: tjpankratz@verizon.net. I’ll return a confirmation. If you don’t get my confirmation, re-contact me.
